Insomnia Home Remedies

Insomnia is a disorder where a person is unable to sleep. As per the medical definition, insomnia can be understood as a "difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep, or both." Most of the people experience the problem on sleeplessness or insomnia at least once in their life time. If stats are to be believed, then 30% to 50% of the masses happen to be affected by insomnia while around 10% of the population is known to be suffering from chronic insomnia.

Reasons for Insomnia

The basic reason for the problem of insomnia is inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. Though there is no set standard for the ideal number of sleeping hours as the sleep needs vary from person to person, but insomnia is identified with the way one feels or performs after one or more sleepless nights. The common symptoms of insomnia are poor concentration and focus, impaired motor co-ordination (being uncoordinated), difficulty with memory etc. With regard to the number of sleepless nights, the Insomnia disorder is categorized into three categories, discussed as under:

- Sleeplessness lasting for less than a week is called Transient Insomnia
- Sleeplessness lasting for around one to three weeks is called Short-Term Insomnia
- Sleeplessness lasting for more than three weeks is called as Chronic Insomnia

  • • Drinking warm milk mixed with honey at bed time, can help a great deal in treating the problem of insomnia.
  • • One table spoon juice of celery leaves with stalks added with one table spoon of honey, if taken religiously for a period of 15 days, can cure or treat insomnia to a great extent.
  • • Chamomile, lobelia or peppermint tea are good sources for bringing in a sound sleep. Hence, a person suffering from insomnia can take one of these teas as an effective home remedy for insomnia.
  • • Prescribed amount of Ayurvedic herbs like Shankhpushpi and Brahmi if taken religiously can be helpful in treating insomnia.
  • • Regular dosage of fine fried cumin seeds powder mixed with a ripe banana pulp helps inducing sleep to a great extent.
  • • Buffalo milk, curd, whole grain, pulses, cereals and nuts etc. should be incorporated in the diet for a sound sleep.
  • • Meditation and special yoga asanas for insomnia like Adho Mukha Svanasana, Viparita Karani and Shava asana can also prove beneficial for curing the problem.
  • • An indulging scalp and feet massage with either of the sesame oil, brahmi oil, jatamatnsi oil or cow's ghee can be useful in insomnia. Though, it is advised to warm the oil a little before applying it.
