Abrus precatorius is an abortifacient herb that can cause miscarriage in pregnant women. It is commonly called Jequirity, Crab's Eye, Rosary Pea, 'John Crow' Bead, Precatory bean, Indian Licorice, Akar Saga, Giddee Giddee or Jumbie Bead. It is also called Ratti in Hindi and used by jewelers as a traditional weighing unit and used by ayurveda doctors because of its medicinal properties.

The leaves, roots and seeds of this plant have medicinal properties so commonly used. Abrus precatorius is found throughout central India.

Medicinal Importance of Abrus precatorius

  1. The seeds of Abrus precatorius are poisnous and used for abortion so used as abortifacient herb. Moreover the powdered seeds of Abrus precatorius upset the uterine functions and prevent the conception also.
  2. Vermifuge paste of seeds is applied in case of stiffness of shoulder joints and paralysis.
  3. Roots of Abrus precatorius are used for gonorrhoea, jaundice and haemoglobinuric bile.
  4. Oil extracted from Abrus precatorius is used for hair growth.
  5. The wounds and scratches caused by dog, cat and mice are treated by this plant.
  6. It is mixed with other ingredients to make the product for curing leucoderma.
  7. Leaves of Abrus precatorius have anti-suppurative properties. These are grounded with lime and applied to cure boil, abscesses and acne sores.
  8. Also the tetanus is cured by this plant.
  9. To cure abdominal pain, the paste of the roots is applied to the abdomen. Even the paste if it with fresh rhizome (haldi) is applied on the wounds for quick remedy.
  10. To cure cough the grinded roots of Abrus precatorius is taken with clarified butter three times a day.
  11. Powdered the dry seeds of Abrus precatorius and take once in a day for two days to cure worm infection.
